History: Last time I made rice (in the rice cooker), I put too much water and the rice went soggy = FAIL. so…

Me: Mum, how do I make rice at Camden if I want to make rice?
Mum: WELL, *runs to get pot* You can bring this pot and you just chuck rice in it and water and chuck it on the stove and it cooks!
Me: Yeah ok but how much water and how much rice do I put in?
Mum: Ok well just measure it like our rice cooker, one finger line of water above the rice.
Me: But you can’t compare this random pot to the rice cooker. What ratio of water to rice is it?
Mum: What’s a ratio?
Me: Like, for how many cups of rice do I put for this amount of water? Or vice versa.
Mum: What do you mean, just one finger line of water.
Me: Yeah but like what’s the ratio?
Mum: *confused face* What are you talking about?
Me: Like if I had one cup of rice. How many cups of water do I use to not make it soggy or dry?
Mum: Oh Just one finger line above the cup line.
Me: What? :S
Mum: …
Me: But what if I do that and the rice fails? It’s a waste of rice!
Mum: If its too dry just chuck it in the microwave.
Me: What if it’s too soggy?
Mum: Hmmm…Then you’re stuffed.
Me: So it’s better to have dry/uncooked rice than soggy rice?
Mum: Yeah.
Me: Right ok, but what ratio of rice to water do i need to ensure it doesn’t become soggy?
Mum: What?
Me: What?
Mum: *frustrated*
Me: So what do I do…
Mum: Omg just take the freaking rice cooker, I’ll use this pot to make rice at home.
Me: OK THANKS! :D

*5 minutes later*

Mum: Don’t your friends have rice cookers?
Me: Who cares. I’m asian. I need rice everyday.
Mum: Ok.
